Description
The SMARTEMP® Auditorium Step Swirl Diffuser, type CSS-FD (Figure 1), delivers supply air in a fixed radial discharge pattern and is designed for installation in the vertical face of auditorium steps. Its highly inductive swirl airflow is directed away from the sensitive ankle regions of seated occupants, rapidly mixing the supply air with room air while quickly reducing discharge velocity. This ensures a draught-free air supply for displacement ventilation in tiered auditoria, providing enhanced thermal comfort and improved indoor air quality.
The CSS-FD diffuser is particularly well suited to steeply raked auditoria, such as sports arenas. The radial discharge airflow attaches to each vertical step face, stabilising the layer of cool displacement air at ankle height across each floor tier. This prevents the cool air from cascading down the steps, eliminating uncomfortable ankle-level draughts. It also maintains the displacement cooling effect on higher seating tiers, preventing the “waterfall” effect that can lead to excessive cooling of the lower front rows.
